The first time I heard the name "Sean Hunter" I was working on an article for WATERSKI Magazine on the world renowned waterski lake, Lake 38.
At the time, Sean had set the Boys 2 slalom record of 2 buoys at 39off. Definitely not a slouch when it comes to skiing.
In October of 2014, I was in Florida for Surf Expo and was shooting some of the Senior Worlds. While I was down, I wanted to make a trip to Lake 38 and just see what it was all about. So I got in touch with Sean's mom and another junior named Kelley Breeden to setup a photoshoot. This was my first private lake shoot, and one I will never forget. Both kids lit it up and the backdrop at Lake 38 didn't disappoint.
Fast forward to 2017. I was on my way back from the Southern Regionals in Alabama and Sean and I wanted to get some stuff shot possibly for my 2018 Summer at the Lake waterski calendar.
For this shoot, I wanted to capture Sean from inside the buoy. My first instinct was to grab my 50mm fixed lens and give it a go. But I wasn't pleased with how much of the backdrop was missing from the shot. So I switched out lenses and had Sean give it another go. This time, we had the sun slowly setting, and most of the lake was in shadows, except for one ball. One ball isn't usually my favorite location ( I like to be between either 3 or 4 ball so I can shoot the skier coming both directions), but with what the sun was giving me, it's what I had to work with.
I grabbed my Sigma 24-70mm lens and set the f-stop to 2.8. If memory serves me right, I had the ISO set to about 320 and the shutter set to 1/1600 of a second. While the sun was providing nice lighting from behind, I also used my speed light to throw just a little bit more light at Sean to eliminate any possible shadows. The result is what you see above.
While this image is a nice one, it's not my favorite from our shoot. My favorite actually appeared in my 2018 Summer at the Lake waterski calendar. If you picked it up, definitely check out Sean.
Be looking for this young man to really shoot up the ranks. He's been on many elite junior podiums and is capable of scores into 41off. Definitely a name you want to remember.
Thanks for checking out this weeks Story Behind the Shot featuring Sean Hunter.
